Frequently
Asked Questions (FAQ's)
Why
is my email not being forwarded to my personal
email account?
There are two scenarios which may be affecting
your receipt of emails:
-
Bulk Mail/Junk Mail folder:
The email is being forwarded, but it might be
automatically deleted depending on how you set
your Junk Mail preferences. Most email service
providers allow users to filter out junk mail
from their Inbox. This mail will either be automatically
deleted, or purged after seven days. If you
want to receive newsletters and other information
from Kellogg clubs, faculty and colleagues,
be sure to place the entire kellogg.northwestern.edu
domain or the specific club mailing list to
which you are subscribed on your "Safe
List" or safe "Mailing List".
-
Forwarding to free email service
providers (particularly hotmail, msn, yahoo):
Beginning in May 2004 we received notification
that alumni forwarding email to free email providers
such as hotmail, msn and yahoo were not receiving
expected emails. In addition, the sender was
receiving no delivery failure notice so they
were unaware emails were not being received
by the intended party.
This occurred as a result of upgrades to Microsoft
(hotmail and msn email) and Yahoo’s server
level junk mail filters. In some cases, Microsoft
and Yahoo have been entirely blocking emails
sent from Northwestern. Initially, no delivery
failure notification was being sent back to
the sender. Northwestern IT has been trying
to work with these email providers to allow
mail to be forwarded, but they’ve only
managed to achieve intermittent service. The
delivery failure notice now received was created
by NUIT to be sent when the email they are attempting
to forward is blocked.
Currently, there is nothing you can do in your
hotmail, msn or yahoo email account to resolve
this. MSN is blocking the message at the server
level, so it never reaches your mailbox. Until
NUIT is able to work out some solution with
the free address providers, we recommend using
a paid email service, preferably an ISP address
such as comcast.net, if it is available to you,
or a business/company address, if possible.
Additionally, users of Yahoo and Microsoft’s
paid email services have not been experiencing
any email delivery failures along with SBCYahoo
users.

Why
can I no longer use the "nwu" email address?
Northwestern University has undertaken a branding
initiative across all schools of the University
to exclusively use the "northwestern"
name in all email and web addresses. In keeping
with this initiative, all Kellogg School email and
web addresses have changed to kellogg.northwestern.edu
on June 20, 2004. Both nwu and
northwestern addresses worked until the official
conversion deadline passed. Now only the northwestern
domain will be recognized. There is a message back
to the sender of any undeliverable message indicating
that Northwestern has changed its email domain from
nwu.edu to northwestern.edu, and suggests that they
try again with the new email domain. This message
will be generated for 12 months. |

Can
I use the Email forwarding domain @alum.kellogg.northwestern.edu?
Yes. alum.kellogg.northwestern.edu
will continue to work for all Kellogg alumni e-mail
forwarding addresses, along with kellogg.northwestern.edu.
We do, however, encourage you to move away from
using alum.kellogg.northwestern.edu since it is
not consistent with all other alumni email addresses.
Please note: your online alumni
directory profile will only list the kellogg.northwestern.edu
address in your email forwarding address. |

What
is email forwarding?
This is a service that gives you access to an email
forwarding address that allows you to forward email
to your personal or employer assigned email account.
Your friends and contacts will always know how to
find you regardless of where you work or live. Distribute
your Kellogg email forwarding address instead of
your daily use account. To minimize spam in your
mailbox, avoid providing your email forwarding address
for service-related uses. For more information on
Internet Safety, go to www.it.northwestern.edu/getctrl/. |

How
do I get an email forwarding address?
All graduates since 1997 were automatically issued
an email forwarding address with their alumni
account. If you graduated before 1997, and have
not already set up your alumni account, please
Activate
online and you will be automatically assigned
your Kellogg email forwarding account. A confirmation
email will be sent to you with your new email
forwarding address. It typically takes 24 hours
for the email forwarding to take affect.

What
happens to my student email account and NetID
once I activate my alumni email forwarding?
Your student NetID will continue to be active
for approximately 120 days after graduation allowing
you to access student servers and online services.
Once you set up your alumni email forwarding,
however, new email will no longer be delivered
into your student NUIT mailbox. It will be redirected
to the forwarding address you enter.
Please Note: For seamless delivery
to your Kellogg email address, please set up your
alumni email forwarding before your student email
account and NetID expires.

alumni server and manage where your email is being
forwarded. Use the Email

address. |

|
What
is the Email forwarding domain name?
The domain name is kellogg.northwestern.edu. |
|
|
What
is my account name?
Your unique account name identifies you to the server
and is needed anytime you access your account or
attempt to make profile changes. For
Full-time, TMP and EMP alumni your account name
is the first initial of your first name, your
last name and the year you graduated. For example,
alumnus John Smith who graduated in 1997 would
have an account name of: jsmith1997
For
Executive Education alumni your account name is
the first initial of your first name plus your
last name followed by -exed. For example, alumnus
John Smith would have an account name of: jsmith-exed |

What
is my password?
Your password is your "key"
to logging onto our system and accessing your
account. Guard this carefully and do not give
it to anyone. For alumni receiving an account
between 1997-2003, this password was created at
the time you were given your account and was mailed
to you. For alumni receiving their alumni account
starting in 2004, you can Activate
your account online and set your password at the
time of activation.
If you forget your password you
will be prompted to answer your secret question
and answer. At that point you can reset your password.
Once you are logged in, you can change your password
at any time. |
